Kelly Smith, Soto High School Principal
B.A. Education, Michigan State University
M.A. Supervision and Administration, National Louis University
For Kelly Smith, her interactions with students are the best part of every day. “As such a young school, we feel like we are trail blazers,” she noted, “and this creates a culture of dreamers, of togetherness and of hard work and grit.” Ms. Smith realized her passion for urban education at Michigan State University, when she had the opportunity to serve in urban schools that provided high quality education to diverse groups of students. After earning her master’s degree and completing a leadership training program through the Ryan Fellowship, Ms. Smith discovered Soto High School. “I knew it was the long-term home for me, and I couldn’t be happier,” she said. In 2017, Soto High School graduated its first-ever senior class. “The students have grown so much,” Ms. Smith reflected. “It was truly a joy to watch them go forth and prosper as young adults ready for the world ahead of them.”
